I Am Who I Am #indielicious

Wow. It's been awhile since I've posted a teaser from Shattered Secrets. But, don't worry, I still love you. I've just been busy with life.

As many of you know, this book is sitting in the hands of a few NY editors. Woot. I love my agent Marisa Cleveland. She's super supportive, and I know we're taking each other places.

Anyway, the last time we spent time together on a Sunday, Derick decided he'd rather drive his car over Mark than take him home. You all know that didn't happen. And, to recap, Abby is our main POV, and she was kidnapped by a couple RPG playing freaks--or at least that's what she thinks.

This scene is in Abby's POV. She's finished her meeting with the counselor and is waiting for Derick to get home from school so they can go hang out in their favorite spot in the woods (and, if you read this blog regularly, you'll know the trail that takes them to this "spot" looks like this: pretty path.).

~I changed my clothes six times before settling on a pair of blue jeans and a cream-colored crew-neck sweater. Mom had to help. She didn't like the idea of me going into the woods—I'm not sure I did either—but I doubted anyone would show up again so soon.

Chills coursed through me . . . soon. I felt like a target, like someone was definitely coming for me, like my next abduction was just a matter of time. I shook my head, staring into the mirror at my hideous face. A black and yellow bruise insulted my left cheekbone. Reaching up, I pressed the tips of my fingers against the swollen flesh. I shouldn't have looked in the mirror. My chin quivered.

Maybe I already needed Dr. Pavarti after all.

"Abby?" Mom stood in the doorway, palm resting on her cheek.

I tore my gaze from the mirror and looked at her.

"Would you like me to help you cover it?"

Staring at my reflection again, I took in the new me. The bruise didn't change who I was. The sling on my arm didn't, either. Through all these things, I was Abby. There was nothing to cover. "No, Mom. Thanks."~

Abby is one tough cookie! Thanks for visiting, and I promise not to make you wait so long between teasers!

You Can Run, But Not Hide #sixsunday

It's Sunday already? Wow. This week flew by. For those who read my post about Arizona, I really appreciate your e-mails, comments, and such. My poor puppy has a liver infection and is on meds, but he's doing much better.

Since I made a mid-week post about Shattered Secrets, I'm going to pick up this week's Six Sunday from there . . . or shortly after.

Click here to read that teaser!

Now that she's out of the car and her kidnapper is urging her toward his shack in the woods, Abigail is ready to put up a fight. Wouldn't you be?

Enjoy!

~Going in wasn't an option. I couldn't. He was deranged. He claimed I had a true family and that he'd been looking for me for a long time. I shook my head, took one more look at the house, then turned and ran for the cornfield.
"You won't make it far, and I don't plan to hurt you," he shouted.~

Hmm. What do you think "Boredas" meant by that? I would certainly run my ass off, and probably not make it far because I'm old and slow, but I'd try to get away!

As always, I love your comments and thank you for stopping in. Make sure to visit other Six Sundayers!

Shiny Teeth

Welcome back, Six Sundayers (and everyone else). We're closing in on the last of the official Six Sunday posts, but don't worry, I'll still find ways to share teasers with you.

This week I'm bringing another segment from my WIP Shattered Secrets. I decided to make a pretty little placeholder image for this book. Makes it more real. More fun.

Anyway, last week Abigail was riding around in the trunk of some mystery--and stinky--person's car. This week, things progress just a bit. She's been screaming and kicking and trying everything in her power to get free, but well, duct tape is some good stuff!

Enjoy!
~ My abductor opened the trunk, and I pushed myself back. A futile attempt to get away.

Black painted the sky, and a dingy yellow light glowed brightly behind his head. At least it was still dark; I couldn't be that far from home. He brought a cigarette to his mouth, then took a long, dramatic drag. Blowing the smoke towards me, he smiled, revealing a mouth full of gleaming sharp teeth.~

Stuffed in the Trunk #SixSunday

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful holiday season. I know I enjoyed my family and friends and wish I were still sitting at home in my comfy chair! But . . . I'm not. Well, I probably will be by the time you're reading this.

This segment comes from Shattered Secrets, right after a strange man abducts Abigail Nichols from her family's front porch.

Enjoy!

I knew two things: my head hurt, and I was stuffed in the trunk of a car traveling down a bumpy gravel road. Dust floated all around me, the millions of tiny particles glowing red from the taillights. Someone's dirty laundry must have filled the duffel bag my head rested on; the smell would have cleared a skunk out of a room. My wrists were bound behind my back, and I was gagged.

Even if I could scream, my voice would have been useless. We were driving, probably in the middle of nowhere.~

Abduction #sixsunday

Merry Christmas, everyone! (Or Happy Holidays)

It's been a very long time since I've posted on Six Sunday, but now that my newest novel is over half-finished, I thought I should start sharing.

This week's excerpt comes out of Chapter One. Abigail Nichols (character named after Kid #2) has just returned home from a date with Mark, slammed the door in her best friend Derick's face (he was being rude), and just when she was about to go upstairs someone knocked on the door!

Enjoy!

~"I'll get it!" I'm going to swear at him. I balled my fists and marched for the door. "What now?"

My breath hitched in my chest. Derick wasn't at the door—it wasn't Mark either.~

Who do you think is at the door? It's definitely not anyone she knows, and his intentions . . . not good!

Bittersweet Love #wildesmeadow #sixsunda

Welcome back, guys!

Last week me and the family were off at the ball park, National's Park to be exact. We had a fantastic time. Today we're rooting on my sister-in-law as she runs a marathon here in DC!

Least someone is doing good for themselves.

This week's six comes from the soon-to-be-released Wilde's Meadow. Kate and Arland are back in their room, a little bothered by the gift Mom gave them, and tomorrow is the day they leave for battle.

This is kind of a bittersweet moment.

Enjoy!

~"Are you afraid?" He asks the question as though he already knows the answer.

"Yes." I think that's why I didn't want to dance, didn't want anyone to see us, and didn't want to celebrate, because this war has only just begun. Everything I hold dear, everything I love more passionately than I imagined possible could be lost.

"If we die, we die fighting."~

So sad.

Strange Gifts #wildesmeadow #sixsunday

Did you see the cover for Wilde's Meadow? Wow. I love my artist. He's absolutely amazing!

November 5th can't come fast enough!

So, if you've read the blurb for Wilde's Meadow, you'll know that Kate's mother gives her a strange gift. I'm here to "show" that gift to you.

Enjoy!

~ Mom returns holding a silver tin about the size of a sandwich, appropriately contained in a sandwich bag. She takes a deep breath. "When you are at a loss, when no other options present themselves, when you have no direction and are not sure where to turn, you may open this. Do not peek, do not rush to see what this tin contains, for if you do, you will disrupt order and stray from the path of Light."
I swallow hard, reaching out to take the odd gift from her. "How will I know?"~

Wow. With directives that stern, how would she know?

Honor Life #wildesmeadow #sixsunday

Wilde's Meadow Cover Reveal hits the web this Wednesday! Be on the lookout!

Last week one of you precious readers questioned why Kate and Arland were at a party BEFORE a war. This week, I'm here to share that reasoning with you.

Enjoy!

~The tables and chairs have been pushed closer to the walls, opening up the great room for dancers. Arland and I have sat in the back left corner all evening, away from everyone I'm supposed to enjoy our last night here with, away from the music, the eyes, the forced happiness.

Pre-war celebrations are disturbing. Everyone in here knows we may fail and that some of us may die, yet our people smile.

"They are here to honor life, Kate. Now, are you going to honor ours and dance with me?"~

Trust #sixsunday #wildesmeadow

For those of you not in the know, Wilde's Meadow is set to release on November 5th! YAY!

Here is one more *unedited* scene where Kate and Arland are in the great room for a little pre-battle celebration.

Enjoy!

~When Arland and I are around others, I find myself glancing away, making faces, tensing up—all the things I was supposed to do before he and Brit disappeared. Back at Watchers Hall, before meeting Dufaigh—or any other Ground Dweller aside from Perth—I didn't have an issue with affection. Actions never bothering me before scare me now.

No matter how united all the Draíochtans are, no matter how much magic or confidence I have, I still worry I will lose Arland at any moment, that a tragic death I've seen him die so many times will come true.

He squeezes my fingers between his. "You said you would have fun, but your thoughts are a constant stream into mine, Kate."~

Oooh. Doesn't that just leave you wondering?!

Bring Sexy Back #sixsunday #wildesmeadow

Hello Fans, Six Sunday-ers, and those here who don't actually want to be--Whaaat? You don't really want to be here?

This week poor Kate has stopped the bleeding on her shoulders. Flanna should NOT be allowed to touch a needle ever again. Now our hero and heroine are spending some along time together.

Enjoy!

~"Well, since you are forcing me, I would like to tell you your hair is a mess." He laughs, a deep, happy laugh.

I smack his shoulder. "Arland."

Arland leans forward then flips me onto my back, pressing his chest against mine, holding me captive with pleasure. "And your smile makes my day."~

Sigh.

Thanks for stopping by!

Alone Time #wildesmeadow #sixsunday

Hey guys! It's been awhile since I've participated in Six Sunday. Life has been hectic, and I didn't think it was fair for you to comment on my blog when I'm not even around.

So, today I bring you an early scene from Wilde's Meadow, the third and final installment in my Darkness Falls trilogy set to release November 5, 2012.

Flanna is making armor for Kate, but Flanna is no Dresser. Kate's bleeding . . . everywhere!

Enjoy!

~"She's trying to kill me." [Kate says]

"There," Flanna trills. "Promise me you will wear this?"

Arland crosses the room in three easy strides, takes the needle from Flanna, then places it on the table next to the excess sewing materials. "I appreciate your concern for Kate, Flanna, but we leave tomorrow, and I would like to spend some time alone with her."

She winks.~

Hmm . . . about to go to war and looking for alone time, eh?!

That's My Sister #wildesarmy #sixsunday

Now we're down to three days from the release of Wilde's Army. I'm going to be a multi-published author!!! I could cry. Actually, I think I am crying. Be right back . . . .

Okay, I've regained my composure. I love all of you who visit regularly and comment on my blogs. Without you, my success wouldn't feel nearly as great!

Now onto the six. I left you last week with a mean-ole-daemon showing off his blood to Kate's sister. But Kate's emotions spiralled a tad bit out of control, and she lost her connection to Brit.

Enjoy!

~I'm screaming. I have no control. Opening my eyes, I jump to my feet. Flames erupt from my chest and spread to my arms and legs like fire on dry straw. I run to the winding path leading down to the horses, without sparing a second to tell Perth what's going on.

He calls to me.~

Yes, she's furious!

Deathly Daemons #wildesarmy #sixsunday

Ten days until the release of Wilde's Army! I can't believe it! *Pinches Arm* Yep, I'm awake!

So, last week we left off with Brit showing Kate some painful images. But, shortly after, daemons came back into the disgusting cave and decided it was killing time. To make this more painful for Kate, they decide to take her sister first!
Enjoy! (That seems so wrong, doesn't it?)

~ The vile creature walks up to my sister, licking his blackened lips. "I am going to enjoy this."

He rips open the front of her shirt.

Trembling, she screams through her gag. Her heart races and sends so much blood to her head, it resonates as it throbs through her temples.

The daemon draws a knife from a pouch on his back then cuts a small hole into his hand.~

Strange Connections #wildesarmy #sixsunday

Hey guys! Another week closer to the release of Wilde's Army. I can't wait. And just look at that cover!

Anyway, Kate just asked Brit to show the location of everyone in the cave. But can Kate handle what she sees?

Enjoy!

~Sharp pains radiate from my shoulder up the back of my head. I want to rub the spot, but my hands won't move. My wrists burn; rope is intertwined between them. She shows me Arland.

My breath hitches in my lungs.

He's worse than when I saw him earlier. ~

Are You in My Head? #wildesarmy #sixsunday

Maybe you've noticed, but I have a shiny new ticker on the side of my blog, counting down the days until the release of Wilde's Army. ARCs are out, and the first review has even come in. It's fantastic, btw!

YAY!

Anyway, here's your six, and happy Sunday. Thank you for always stopping in to comment!

Picking up where we left off last week, Kate is still in her sister's head.

Enjoy!

~ The torches on the walls are still bright with flames. The air smells so strongly of rust and mold, I find it hard not to vomit. Brit's chest hurts as she holds her breath. She pushes the stench from her thoughts, but when she does draw in a deep, ragged gasp for air, it has to pass through her nose—starting the cycle again.

"Brit?"

"Kate?~

It's an excited reunion, even if it's all in their head! To read other Six Sunday greatness, visit the official site!

Where Am I? #WildesArmy #sixsunday

Happy Sunday, everyone. I cannot believe another week has passed--and somehow we're out of town AGAIN! This weekend we're in Dover. (Go Tony Stewart!)

Okay, so here's the set up: Perth and Kate are waiting for the right time to move in and rescue the others. In last week's six, Perth suggested she try to make a connection with Brit in order to learn more about the situation. So, that's exactly what Kate does. In this scene, she's just connected with Brit.

Enjoy!

~Control over my hands and feet returns, but it doesn't feel anything like what I'm used to—they're not my own. There isn't enough time to think about how weird being removed from my body is. Brit is tied up to a cold cave wall, her mouth gagged. It feels as though there are a thousand cotton balls on my tongue. The wet rocks send chills up her back . . . my back.

She aches, she's tired, and starved for food.~

Doesn't sound like fun, does it?

Battling for Power #wildesarmy #sixsunday

Hey everyone. Hope you're all enjoying the long weekend--assuming you have one--and that you're staying safe.

I have a special visitor from NY (Hi, Johanna!), and it's Kid #1's 12th birthday. It's been a beautiful, action-packed weekend, and I doubt I'll be around much. I LOVE THE SUMMER!

Anyway, picking up slightly where we left off, Perth's just told Kate that she should use her connection with her sister in order to learn more about where the daemons are keeping the others.

Enjoy!

~"Is this going to be like the chatter box? Do I have to figure everything out on my own?" [Kate asks]

Perth stops drawing in the dirt like a two-year-old and locks his cold gaze on me. "You seem to have quite a bit figured out already. Why do you doubt yourself so much?"

I ignore him and close my eyes.~

Ahh. These two are really struggling to learn about one another.

Who's In Charge? #wildesarmy #sixsunday

Today I'm flying back from my mini-vacation in Florida. Once I land, I'll be heading over to Nationals Stadium to meet my family for our first baseball game of 2012.

It's going to be a busy summer. I just know it!

Okay, now that you know I'm not actually around, here's today's set up. Kate is annoyed with Perth because he wants them to sit in the open (and if you've read Wilde's Fire, you know how dangerous being in the open is) and wait for the "right" time to head out to rescue the others.

She's basically just said, let's go now, and he abruptly changes the subject.

Enjoy!

~Perth draws circles in the dirt with his finger. "When you were in your sister's mind, what did you see?"

"Why?" Propping my hands on my hips, I stare down at him the way my mom always did when she was punishing me.

He doesn't meet my eyes. "I want to see if you were given clues about the trap you want to run into."~

Yeah, trust is a BIG issue with these two. Do you think they'll ever get along?

Do Snakes Make You Shudder? #wildesarmy #sixsunday

First.... Happy Release Day to me. Happy Release Day to me. Happy Release Day to meee, -- Hey, did you catch that? It's Wilde's Fire's release day! I'll post some official links later, but for now, on with Six Sunday!

If you've followed my blog for a while, you know I don't like creepy crawlies. Snakes, spiders, scorpions--seems like anything with an 's' scares me--these are just a few of the creatures I've encountered. So, it only makes sense to share a scene between Kate and Perth where they encounter some creepy crawlies of their own . . . .

Enjoy!

~"While we would be guarded against anything getting in, we are not guarded if the animals get loose and run out. If that were to happen, our position could be compromised. If daemons discovered us here, we would be trapped . . . unless you wanted to use the river, but I do not believe either of us would enjoy swimming in that," he says, giving the river a fearful glance.

"What's in the river?" I follow his gaze to the water barely visible through the blanket of Darkness.

"Serpents."~

Can we all say shudder? That's what Perth did as he said that. He's not talking about little water snakes either! :-)

Do You Trust Me?

Happy Sunday everyone!

In seven (7) days, Wilde's Fire will not only be on virtual stands, my baby will be on actual stands. Can you believe it?

Me either. :-)

I have stores who WANT to stock this book on their shelves. So amazing.

And for those who are dying to know, Wilde's Army should be out in a month or so. I'm hoping to have cover art soon.

SET UP: Perth and Kate have just left the forest and are now out in the open with nothing to use for cover. Perth's thinking the daemons won't expect them to hide on this rock ledge above the river . . . and Kate's not so sure she agrees.

Enjoy!

~"Do you trust me?" [Perth asks.]

"Not entirely."

He sucks in a sharp breath. "Have I done anything deserving of your distrust?"

"Not yet." I clamp my hand over my mouth.~

Kate and Perth are going to have a very rocky relationship if she keeps up this behavior!
