Getting to Know You

I had an epiphany. Well, not quite I solved all the world's problems kind of epiphany, more the kind of what do I want to ask my blog followers today.

You see, I like people. Often I say the opposite of that, but it's not true. You put me in a room with a bunch of strangers and I swear by the time we're ready to part ways, we'll be friends—or at least exhausted from laughing a lot.

Meeting new people is fun. Learning an individual's history, their likes and dislikes, where they're from, etc, is often what opens our world to new cultures, new viewpoints . . . you get it.

So, I'm asking you to share a little bit about yourself. Where are you from? What do you do? What's your favorite color, favorite book?

I'll start: You obviously all know my name. I was born in Illinois, but my parents had their own epiphany and moved us to Texas when I was at the ripe, young age of six months. Although I lived in Texas until the age of sixteen, I consider myself to be a Virginian. This state is my favorite so far. If I ever strike the book lottery, my husband and I joke that we'll move to Vermont. We'll see. It's gonna be hard to pull me away from Virginia.

I'll leave my day job out of this. I'm an author. This is what makes me tick. My favorite color is purple. My favorite book of all time is The Hobbit, but The Hunger Games trilogy is my favorite series of modern times.

I think that's a good start. So tell me about yourself. I really want to know!

~Krystal

  1. I live in Sydney, Australia and always have done. I'm a lawyer, and as much as I love writing, I also love my day job. Most of the time. I'm lucky there, I guess. The real luck was getting a great job with a small firm straight out of uni. I was the boss's second hire. Nine years on that makes me a pretty valued senior employee! So I can't complain about my work life. It would be great to write full-time but I can be happy if I don't.

My favourite colour is red. I've been married two times. The first time my dress was red, the second time black and gold. My divorce was due to the fact my husband had multiple personalities. More personal than you asked, maybe, but I'm OK with sharing that.

My favourite book... too many to choose. My favourite series are The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind and The Discworld by Terry Pratchett.

    1. You know you should always do what you love. How amazing is it that you have two things you love and are doing? So cool! I love red as well. You can find lots of red shirts in my closet.

The multiple personality thing is interesting and scary. I'm guessing that developed (or revealed itself) after you were married? ((Hugs))

      All very good books, too!

    2. It develops in early childhood but yes it wasn't revealed until after we were married. Sad, but quite some years in the past now.

    3. So sorry, but hopefully you're happy now. I'm intrigued by the color of your wedding gown. Do you have a picture?

  2. Good Morning Krystal :)
You know quite a bit about me already, but I will play! I was born in Ohio. I have lived in New Jersey,New York, Washington state, California, Texas, Virginia and now Florida. I have 6 kids ranging in age from 21 to 5. My career has been teaching. I have taught several grades of children, organized children's church groups, been the director of daycare/preschool and taught aerobics. I have enjoyed all of that but my epiphany has been to get back to what my heart loves which is creative pursuits. Namely, writing, drawing and theater. I was big into all of that before I had to really grow up. I am intensely focused on the writing at present :). Pinkish purple is my fav color.

    1. 21? Did I miss the news about your 21 yo somewhere? You've lived all over the place too. Very neat. I'm assuming Florida is your favorite state? So warm and sunny.

And you get a bonus star for pinkish purple being your favorite color!

    1. Do you miss the boys in the house with you? I always wonder what "home" will be like when the kids are all gone.

You know I've really been pondering a new website/blog in one combo. Maybe you can help me?

  4. Hi Krystal - I'll try to keep this short as I can ramble on. I'm 44, live in Glasgow with my OH & 15yo daughter plus looney dog. Not working due to various maladies but keep busy with screenwriting class & theatre group. I'm obsessed with Dominic West, Christian Kane & Matt Smith. Love sci-fi esp. Trek, Who & Firefly. I like indie folk music. Am currently reading A Clash Of Kings by George RR Martin as I loved Game Of Thrones. Fave colour - dark misty blue xxx

    1. Screenwriting and a theater group sound a lot nicer than working anyway! I love indie folk music. I love indie music period.

Dark misty blue is a gorgeous color!

Thanks for popping in and sharing! :-)

  5. Ha! You don't WANT to know ME! I'm your worst nightmare! LOL JK...thought a little drama might be interesting this morning. Sorry!

I'm a mom of 3 stair-step aged chillun (From the South, but transplanted to OH...eek!) Teacher turned SAHM turned freelancer-wanna-be-author.

Super Type A and driven. Trying to teach my kids to be better than me:) and learn how to relax and organized! LOL

Oh, yeah...and I love seeing the friends I've made this year do what they love with a vengeance!

  6. Let's see...I live in Las Vegas, my world revolves around my two sons, who are now two amazing young men. I work as a Nurse, but like you, want to hit that book lottery someday. Favorite color=orange. Favorite book=The Lover by Marguerite Duras. I've been married twice, also. My first divorce was because my ex had multiple, uh, hum, 'personalities', read as, blondes, brunettes and redheads. I can't sing, or dance, or draw, so I write. :)

    1. What is it that draws you to the color orange? LOL. Is it because it's bright and vibrant like you?

When you said the bit about the multiple personalities, I was all like NO WAY - I didn't realize this was so common. (Ciara's husband truly had multiple personalities.) Sorry to hear about his cheating ways.

I can't dance either, but if you watch me while I clean, you will see me shake my booty! ;-)

  7. Ok.. I was born in Toronto Ontario, but raised in Mississauga, which is 30 min out of Toronto. I met my HB online at Yahoo Personals of all things... and it actually worked out. We've been married almost eleven years(EEK!!!), and have two amazing boys. Colin is almost nine and Dylan is going to be four.

My day job is a hotel clerk, and it has it's ups and downs... to pass the time when it's dead, I'm usually got my nose in a book, or I'm writing my book. When I'm home, and the kids are in bed is when I take my time to write and have my escape!

Also.... not liking that I will be officially in my late thirties in April!

Alright Krystal, I thought I was the only one who danced while cleaning?!? It does make it more enjoyable!!

    1. There's nothing wrong with online dating. :-) My hubby and I met on the Internet. Not a dating site, but through an online thing. :-) We were friends for a long time before we met, then friends for a long time before we admitted we had feelings for one another.

And I wear headphones and dance all around the house when I clean.

    2. I should probably wear headphones to, as my children don't like to hear me sing! At least my oldest doesn't....

    3. My kids make fun of me when I sing.

  8. Hope you don't mind a guy crashing the party.

My name is Ken, or Kenny, depending on how long you've known me. I live in Michigan. When I was 19 a guy in a fancy Marine uniform pointed at me and said, "Based on your test score, you'd make a good ..........." That was 22 years ago and I am still doing the same thing, though not for the Marine Corps anymore.

I'm married, 10 years, and have two kids. Through the years I've met a ton of funny people, but none funnier than my two kids. They get it from their mom, my wife. We often break into smiles and laughter when trying to punish them. I know, terrible, but they didn't come with instructions.

A friend mentioned NaNoWriMo and I looked it up. I do some distance running and it was during a run soon after when I first had that, "I can write a novel", moment. So I did, then I wrote another, and then I got my first criticism. Nobody told me about that. But it was good thing because it highlighted my weaknesses and I've been working on them ever since.

Favorite book- Hands down, Shoeless Joe, by WP Kinsella. I've read the same tatered copy almost every spring since I first bought it in 1991 or so.

Second favorite, The Dying Animal, by Philip Roth

  9. Well hi Ken, or Kenny. :-) Those Marines sure are convincing. My hubby was in the MC for a few years. Then he realized he could make a whole lot more out of his uniform.

We often laugh when trying to punish our kiddos, too. I think we see ourselves in them so much.

I love that I can write a novel moment, and hate that first criticism moment following, but you're right...it makes us better/stronger!

  10. Hi Krystal!

I am in Calgary, Alberta. I do NOT listen to country music, wear cowboy boots, ski, or eat steak. Just a rebel I guess.

I am a mother first (to a petite 20 year old daughter and 17 year old giant of a son), writer, new blogger. I count beans for a living, but also hope to win that elusive book lottery.

Favorite colours are red (because it is life) and black (because it goes with everything). Favorite books? So many to choose from, but I'll narrow it down to "I know this much is true" by Wally Lamb and "The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver. It used to be anything by Agatha Christie but I finished reading all of hers by the time I turned 18 and had to branch out... :)

    1. Well, I don't listen to country music, wear cowboy boots, or ski, but I do eat steak. :-) And I spent most of my years in Texas.

I do a lot of accounting as well. COME ON BOOK LOTTERY!

I like how you explained your favorite colors. Very nice. Red is a fantastic color, but like I said purple is my fave. Something just so inspiring about it.

Thanks for stopping in. Give those kids a big hug! (and your 20 yo might like my book. hahaha)

    2. Here, home of the Calgary Stampede, I'm like a pariah for NOT doing those things. But hey, there's a lot of us pariahs lately.

My daughter loves my book! I bet she'd love yours too. She works in a book store and reads a lot, so I kindly accept her compliments. :)

  11. Hi, Krystal. Hmm? Thanks for asking. I'm in my early 40's and work at Sun-Maid Raisin Growers (the lady on the red box). I'm a Packaging Supervisor and start at 4:00 am. *sigh* I dreamt about being an author for twenty years or longer and finally saw it come to fruition in 2010. My favorite color is blue. Although I write and read horror, my favorite book is "Beach Music" by Pat Conroy. I listen to classic rock and 80's/90's heavy metal, but last concert was Michael Buble. 'nuff said?

  12. I'm from Atanta, and I'm a halfway decent blogger working on the same book I've been struggling with for almost a decade. My favorite colors are purple and green, and my current favorite book is Stephen King's Duma Key. I've read it five times. :-)

    1. Five times shows dedication! :-) You must really love that book. How does its cover look? Well-worn? Tattered bindings make me proud. Get to work on that book, girly!

  13. Hello Krystal,
I am actually new to this site and was turned on to you by one of my twitter friends re-posting your stuff. The books look very interesting! I too am an author and have self-published two books (Royal Prince Vince and Creative Exercises to Inspire) and am working on 1/2 a dozen more, one of which will hopefully be out by the end of this month?!?! (Though, looking less and less likely :() My favorite color is black, because it is just easier! I love reading and could never pick one favorite genre, let alone one favorite book! My day job is writing, but my passion is my family. (Yes, those are actually interchangeable!) I also blog at http://anangellslife.blogspot.com/ and guest post on occasion. I love meeting new people, especially other authors! It is nice to be able to talk shop and learn from others' experiences! Glad to have found you!

I browsed your blog and saw you fed-up you were/are with the publishing industry. Hope self-pubbing has treated you well.

I like black as well. You're right. Goes with everything! Hope you'll visit more often!
