Car Ride Home

I picked up my kids from my mother-in-law's today. We had an interesting ride home. Piling three children--two of which are in car seats--into the backseat of my Jetta is always interesting, but somehow our conversation on this hot, muggy and downright intolerable day was more interesting than most.

"Mommy, why are yawns contagious," Ethan asked.

I yawned. "I don't know."

Cue laughter.

Cue contagious yawn by Ethan.

Cue more laughter.

Cue contagious yawn by Abby.

Cue hysterical giggles. This drive is the best thing I've experienced all day.

"So, Mommy, why do you think yawns are contagious?"

Dammit, I yawned again. "You don't even have to yawn and I catch it. I don't know, Ethan. You tell me."

Cue contagious yawn by Ethan.

Cue laughter.

Cue contagious yawn by Abby.

Cue laughter.

"Yawn," Ethan said, then giggled.

"Yawn," Abby repeated, then giggled.

And not to be left out, Clarissa said, "Ehhh."

This went on for the ten minutes it took us to drive out of my mother-in-law's neighborhood. Every time I heard the word 'yawn' I felt the urge to do just that. And every time I did, it went around in it's contagious way and we'd all giggle.

And I just yawned again.

  1. What if I catch a yawn while reading this. Is that rude? LOL!

  4. Ok, first, re: your reply to Sarah's comment - OUCH lol. Your post reads like a screenplay (Cue laughter/Cue contagious yawn) I had a movie playing out in my head as I read it, with the camera switching POV to each of you yawning and giggling.

  5. It's a rare day when you can make kids yawn and laugh at the same time.

I've been meaning to ask you Krystal, are you sure you're old enough to drive, let alone have kids? I mean look at you!!

  8. I love the way children always think their parents know everything - and it is good to know there are still some things around which none of us can explain!! You will have to set a question a day - certainly helps the journey home go faster!

  10. K. Syrah - you are so correct. I could never convey how sweet and wonderful the moment was. I'm not that good. ;-)

  11. I miss those moments so much. People always asked me, on my weekends with all five kids at once, “How in the world do you manage the madness of five kids?” Then I think of moments like a drive back from the grocery store, Sister Hazel’s “Change Your Mind” comes on the radio and on cue all 6 of us break out in song, singing with it word for word. The falsettos and the cracking voices and the poor singing, in my case, and the synchronized cacophony just makes me smile and think, this is the best that life has to offer and I’m grateful to be a part of these kids.
